glossary:ketoconazole

(1) (Science: drug) An antifungal medication available in pill and liquid form that is effective against a variety of fungal infections such as oral, vaginal and oesophageal thrush and cryptococcosis.

Possible side effects include serious liver damage and reduced testosterone levels.

(2) A drug that treats infection caused by a fungus. It is also used as a treatment for prostate cancer because it can block the production of male sex hormones.
