Cells that ingest (and destroy) foreign matter, e.g. microorganisms or debris, via phagocytosis, i.e. a process by which these cells ingest and kill offending cells by cellular digestion. They are extremely useful as an initial immune system response to tissue damage. Examples of these types are monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
